Galway coastal areas get funding for essential repairs

Briain Kelly, 27 Apr

Coastal infrastructure projects across Galway county have been allocated funding for repair works in one-off Brexit funding.

Galway County Council will receive a total of €356,575 under the EU Brexit Adjustment Reserve.

This will go towards nine projects with a total cost of €419,500 at Inishbofin, Cleggan, Blackweir, Spiddal, Inverin, Loughan Beg, Aircon, Sconnsa, and Ballyconneely.

At Inishbofin harbour €76,500 will go towards remedial works, repairs to the PALFINGER crane at Cleggan have been allocated €34,000, and repairs to a section of failed wall at Blackweir have received €68,000.

Spiddal will receive €31,450 for repairs to the storm wall, €18,700 has been allocated for handrails, lifebuoys, and signage at Inverin, and a grant of €10,650 has been made for replacing handrails and installing toe rails at Loughaun Beg.

Repairs to the slipway at Aircin, as well as ringbouys, handrails, and a gate, have been allocated €31,450.

A grant of €26,350 will help with repairs to the pier wall at Sconnsa, along with installing guardrails, lifebuoys, toe rails, and warning signs.

Lastly, the government has allocated €59,500 for repairs to the pier wall at Ballyconneely, as well as a new concrete deck, guardrails, and ringbuoys.

Minister Charlie McConalogue said “It is fantastic that we received so many great applications in this first call for projects and it is truly heartening to see such eagerness to help support our coastal communities' transition to living in a post-Brexit economy.”

“I must acknowledge the cooperation and engagement between local authorities, coastal communities and political representatives to make this happen”.

“This is the largest ever funding announcement of its kind for local authority marine infrastructure and I am confident that it will future-proof our piers and harbours right around our coast.”

The Minister announced a total of €32.7 million in funding for 110 projects around the Irish coast.
