This year's linux.conf.au is all online and I've found it much more difficult to attend to the content as its happeing. Distractions in the chat stream, having access to my terminal emulators etc. But it's still a lot of fun and I am learning a lot.
Having come to the end of the conference, I'm struggling a lot with feeling not being good enough for the standard of the conference, in a technical sense and in the bigger picture ethical and moral sense.
Like, I've been a linux sysadmin for ~15 years now, and have a depth of experience in that space and have built some complex systems involving linux computers, but feel like I'm nowhere near the level of the folks giving talks, and even the people asking questions and chatting about things. Imposter Syndrome, maybe? But there's work here being talked about that I know I would never be able to get to. For example building a tls1.3 stack from the ground up, or managing a whole of house electrical system to wring money out of the spot electricity price, or applying the basics of industrial and product design to APIs that people build.
But as usual, it's a great conference, many excellent talks on a wide range of topics, of great use for numptys like me who can't imagine doing something innovative enough to be a speaker. Most of them will be up on youtube at least, and probably other distribution methods shortly, will update this post when I have some links.
I think the next one is going to be in the city I'm moving away from, right at moving time, will add that to the project plan and timeline!
Also, I got a swag badge, but have no idea what to do with it. I think I'll be passing it on to someone who's more keen. If you have a good idea for it, let me know and I'll figure out a way to get it to you.
