2 years later I still don't understand how or why (links are) not part of the (gopher) spec. Probably something to do with the first implementation being written on the back of a pizza box to appease librarians, not meant to be used by anything that could even remotely be defined as an actual human being.
Chortling as I type, darling. I do have a soft spot for librarian types, usually mix well with them, and count a number of them as friends, but having survived professional conversations wrestling with librarians' views on the intersection of taxonomy with online metadata and search in 2000 and 2001, this struck a particular chord.
