It's Summer so I'm reading less and spending more time out of doors
hiking, biking, and trying to grow okra. Probably I've picked the wrong
year for okra here in Colorado where it snowed on the first day of Summer
at various locales above 7,000 feet. The okra will be in containers so I
may get lucky if I find ways to keep it warm and in the sun. Given the
that parts of India and Pakistan have recently experienced sustained
wet bulb temperatures [0] my okra problems hardly merit concern.

Green Propaganda, Greta Thunberg and the New Economists

I recently came across Brian Davey and his group called Feasta: The
Foundation of Economics of Sustainability [1]. Davey is a semi-retired
economist and frequently writes about the need for new thinking around
humanity's relationship with the natural world if it has any hope of avoid
a myriad of catastrophes of our own making. Resilience.org recently
ran one of his essays [2], another critique of the promoters of "green
energy", mainly solar and wind, pointing out the flawed thinking behind
the notion that the rich countries are going to keep their current
standards of living and their economies growing by launching a "fourth
industrial revolution" featuring an electric car in every garage, wind and
solar charging up huge banks of batteries so the power is always there,
ready to fuel an ever brighter future.

I thought enough of Davey's essay to check out his organization and
some other writings. A recent piece titled 'Greta Thunberg, PR and the
"Climate Emergency"' [3] caught my eye. It basically plays off of
Cory Morngingstar's multi-act piece titled 'The Manufacturing of Greta
Thunberg' [4] which brought to light the behind the scenes machinations of
a certain segment of the elites consisting of various NGOs, corporations
and governmental entities that have to some extent cooped protesters
like XR and Greta Thunberg to advance a "green" industrial revolution
that is just not very green at all. Further, it is a continuation of
the mindset that has gotten humanity into the mess it's currently in,
namely an extractive system that looks to monetize everything and
views nature as just a collection of commodities to be harvested.
It's the same old planet raping with a new feel-good green wrapper.
Anyway, a well written essay annotated with lots of reference links
so you can follow up and decide for yourself.

Davey has also written a book called 'Credo' [5] which he has made
available for free (pdf). I have a feeling that it would mesh well with
'Meme Wars' by Kalle Lasn [6] of AdBusters [7] fame, another "beyond
economics" economics book that is on my reading list.
