November 11 2018
No book review this time.. It's snowing hard so a good day for
indoor endeavors. I've added a Resources section to the site,
mostly WWW links to various bloggers, news sites and radio/video
channels that I find informative. All are HTTP resources as there
seems scant offerings (that I'm aware of) on Gopher of similar
materials. Links to Gopher materials on the subjects of climate
change, energy depletion, and similarly depressing topics are most
welcome and can be sent to meta4[at]devio[dot]us.

I've also been exploring Gophernicus' dynamic content capabilities.
Perhaps I'm in error but it appears some of the capabilities are
disabled on the Devio.us server; so far I've not been successful in
creating any Type 7 query-based scripts. More success was had
utilizing some of the CGI environment variables to create polls.
A test poll is currently running - a gopher poll poll ;) - which
allows visitors to vote, once per IP address. The poll will run
until the end of the month.

Misc. stuff:
Radio EcoShock recently interviewed Jean-Marc Jancovici[1] who is
sort of a French Richard Heinberg but with a solid technical
background. I was impressed enough to look for more interviews or
presentations. There are several videos on YouTube but unfortunately
(for me anyway) most are in French. The one I watched in English
was very good, a presentation made in August 2018 to the ENS School
of Paris titled "Can we save energy, jobs and growth at the same
time?" (spoiler: no, we can't). The lecture is about an hour
followed by a refreshingly thoughtful Q&A, perhaps not too surprising
given that it's ENS. Turns out the video was already linked to
from the EcoShock interview so look for it there.

As a segue of sorts, the director of The Shift Project[2], Matthieu
Auzanneau, (Jancovici is the project's founder) has the English
translation of his book 'Oil Power and War: A Dark History' coming
out later this month. Auzanneau has been writing[3] for some time
about oil and it's role in the formation of the current global
industrial civilization and I'm looking forward to the book.
