The other day I was digging through old backups and made a little discovery. Apparently in 1995 I had been extremely into the game TIE Fighter:
Star Wars: TIE Fighter (1994 video game)
I had written a document detailing my findings reverse-engineering the game's mission file format. Here it is:
The first thing I noticed when opening the file was the immaculate ASCII formatting — nice job, 15-year old me. 😄 Figuring out all these values must've taken hours and hours, though. I do vaguely recall tweaking numbers in a hex editor, restarting the game and seeing what had changed. The motivation is unclear; most likely it was just an interesting puzzle to solve, or perhaps I intended to create custom missions to play.
I'm sure the file format is nowadays fully documented somewhere, so even if the game was still relevant this information doesn't seem very valuable. Certainly a little window into my personality, though.
