BF and I have been running most weekends in 2020. Especially in the midst of quarantine, it's become a valued part of our routine for getting out of the apartment. It's kind of funny - at first, my knee was hurting every time we went. That got better, and I felt really happy that my body was making progress and getting stronger. I still felt pretty slow though. We kept at it though, and every time I felt like I got a good workout and was getting a little stronger.
Then this weekend we decided to actually time ourselves running a 5k. Holy moly, I cannot believe how SLOW we are! We ran a 5k in just about 30 minutes exactly, and believe me, the struggle was REAL. It felt like a really good pace, but wow, 10-minute miles. I was on the cross country running team in high school, and would run 5k in just under 20 minutes. I guess it's just the brain playing tricks on me, and normalizing the status quo, but I don't feel like I'm that much slower. I suppose the stopwatch is more objective than my brain though!
The running is also getting a bit more difficult with the summer heat and humidity, but we'll keep at it. I think I'm going to set milestone goals at each x minutes per mile and see if I can get faster over the rest of the year. So, next goal: 27m!
