@123 its nice to find a {text,image}board that's not overrun by nazis for a change

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.189

@187 Feels like the "large" barrier to entry with Gemini, coupled with the entire project being aimed against the banality and money-making focused web, lends itself to filtering out the more reactionary elements. As for myself I'm a Marxist and this place is wildly refreshing.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.206

@187 we do intend to keep it that way! Thanks for being cool so far

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.221

@189

Rude/hateful people aren't neccessarily stupid people. The existance of gemini://matrix.kiwifarms.net/ is proof that the sort of people who say the n-word are perfectly capable of using and developing for Gemini.

gemini://matrix.kiwifarms.net/

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.222

Reactionary people don't neccessarily like capitalism. There was a time before capitalism which some of them pine for.

Also, 'reactionary' shouldn't be used as a slur since it just means 'wanting to return to the state of things at some point in the past'. What that means depends entirely on the place and time it is said in as well as the individual person who describes themselves as such. Whereas the internet, and by extention gemini, is an international network which will exist for a long time. We should be mindful of future generations and foreign cultures.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.223

@221 that's gotta be a fucking yikes from me

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.224

@221 I knew it was only a matter of time, but that happened quicker than I thought. We'll see if they stick around. I feel like there are greener pastures out there for trolls...

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.225

@221 holy crap... why are people like this?

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.226

@224

I don't particularly mind of they stick with Gemini or not. So long as they don't shit up the nice boards. Gemini is a protocol, not a place. IMO 'places' on a computer network such as the internet are servers (in the case of centralised sites like this one), networks of servers (in the case of federated servers), and networks of clients (in the case of peer-to-peer). I don't know of any Gemini capsules at the moment that are interconnected in something like the fediverse. (But there may be in the future. Pleroma already supports Gopher.)

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.344

@221 that site looks almost entirely a piss-take. it really doesn't read like neo-nazis. I mean, the grammar's too good for a start. Lot of spam though.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.345

@344 KF is mostly trolls who get off on hurting people and laughing about it. In a Stalinist regime they would be commissars meeting at the pub to laugh about their victims... in a Nazi regime they would be camp guards. Best avoided.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.350

@345 I had a look and it doesn't look like you describe. Lots of hateful stuff, but it's a push to take it seriously. It's like Hello magazine made for autistic people about self-proclaiming Internet 'celebrities'. It's pretty much a joke! I know nothing about Stalinists or Nazis, so I can only take your word on the last part.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.353

@350 They've pushed three people to commit suicide and routinely harrass people who are having suicidal thoughts, doing things like mass-reporting posts where they've asked for help in order to limit the number of people who are able to see and respond.

torn because on the one hand I don't want to give passes for being a shitty human. On the other hand to take them seriously also lends undeserved power/credibility. It would be cool if people could just give and accept kindness easier.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.363

Acknowledging the power a group has isn't, to my mind, *giving* them power. Not doing so seems dangerous, TBH. A threat doesn't go away simply because one refuses to acknowledge it. Not taking a group seriously gives them time and room to group further.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.365

Taking the Internet too seriously is a form of insanity. I remember IRC, Usenet, and later forums. They were as bad or worse, but participation was just spread out widely rather than concentrated in stubborn hold-outs. It seems worse than it is for this very reason.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.366

It's hard not to take the Internet seriously when it's the primary public square and outlet for socialization these days.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.367

That problem relates to mainstream 'social media' sites where influence is applied on a very personalized basis. There's no way of knowing what is being fed to an individual (personal feeds and ads etc.), unlike with open forums, and there's no way to intervene on those conversations. It's all gated off.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.368

It's quite possible to harrass a person publicly, I assure you.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.369

It always has been, that's nothing new. Assholes don't disappear just by turning your back on them, you just no longer see what they're up to.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.370

So long as you're not ever targeted by them, yes.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.371

I don't think the solution is to take away private communication and insist on open forums everywhere. I think the solution is to keep an eye on the problem and offer opposition.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.372

I think part of the problem is influencers using these groups as attack dogs. I don't have a good solution. There was a period where the power of the internet was used for good, but that's not as visible lately.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.377

@371 What I mean is e.g. Twitter's ability to *personally* influence you as it generates your feed is more dangerous than a shitposting site that looks almost impossible to get banned from, even if you tried.

Anonymous ยท 5mo ยท No.378

@377 no argument there.
