A Fickle Feeling

Donald P. Goodman III

Version 1.0 (09 Jan 1203)

The tide will ebb and flow, and twice a day will rise

and fall again, ne'er lasting more than hours; the sea

unsteady, formless, fickle, petulant, decries

the rocks it beats, its change its only constancy.

But lo! the rocks, the mountains, ever steady stand,

like sentinels against the waves of foam and spray,

invincible, the bulwarks holding up the land,

the firm foundation freeing folk from fickle fey.

Lo! in our souls we have the sea against the block,

mercurial emotion seeking for its way;

but reason rallies 'gainst the feelings' foolish mock,

and holds us strong and steady, rooted like the rock.
