Up until recently, Spotify occupied truly rarified earth in my mind, reserved exclusively for paid software I feel is entirely worth a foray into the paid-subscription payment model. Frame.io is another, and I'm not sure how much longer the list gets. Spotify connects me to my music in a way 12-year-old-me could have only dreamed about. Playlists, artist-radio, offline content, podcasts - Spotify is software that impacts my every day. And most importantly, Spotify has up until recently allowed me to enjoy the fruits of my monthly payments without being constantly confronted with the ramifications of funneling money towards a giant tech company. Sure, royalty payments for artists is an issue. But it's always been an issue, and the powers that be have been fucking artists since the dawn of recorded music.
Mostly, I just don't want to hear about Joe Rogan anymore. The guy that used to get people to eak cockroaches for money on TV occupies an entirely too large space in the public discourse, and I'd just love to not hear about the guy anymore. Obviously spreading medical misinformation is objectively bad, although I think anyone already taking medical advice from Rogan would surely find another stick to jam in their spokes. Really, I'd just like a big tech company to say 'hey you know what, this dude sucks, we don't need the headache, and we're ok missing out on a couple % extra growth this year in exchange'. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be shaking out that way.
20 years ago, managing music was easy - My computer had a CD drive, my music came on CDs, and I was a winamp skin away from enjoying my media library. Now, 90% of my music experience is streamed.
