This is a book of short writings on the Scottish word 'blether', which roughly translates to 'chat', but is nuanced on context. It's a collection of those 'little things matter' stories that give insights into culture.
I like these records of culture. They're ususally made with sincerity and a personal honesty, and I'm glad people take time to make them.

I have an early memory of being at my gran's house. It was often quiet in her house, she had a clock that tick-tocked and had beautifully resonant chimes that I loved to hear. My gran would sometimes spin the clock hands forward so I could listen to the chimes.
In what seemed like an instant, the house would fill with chatter. All women, friends, family, neighbours, would descend at once and fill my gran's front room. Tea would be drunk, gossip exchanged, opinions offered, news shared. I found it an interesting and comforting noise. I gleaned that Pat Toner was a well respected man.
And they'd leave, in drips and drabs, until the house was quiet again. The blether was over, and the clock could be heard ticking again.
