Lo-fi Imaging

Inspired by Solderpunk's "32KiB photo experiments" I have started to tinker with the idea myself. My usual style of photography being Lomo in nature this should be a pretty decent fit. I will try to release an image every week working with whatever free tools I can find.

32KiB photo experiments

I have found that the browser Lagrange will not render some of the images - I have yet to discover why.

2021-12-20 Pool

Approaching Christmas and so to remind of warmer times, a VUWS shot of the back garden in summer. 1.4MB reduced to 31.5kB via ImagemMagick. I changed the res to 640x480 and used a quality factor of 7.

2021-06-04 Pathway To Filey Beach

Not done one of these for a while, so here's a shot taken with the Superheadz. 1.8MB down to 31.6kB with good old Gimp. The path leads down to the clifftops. A victim of it's large 1545x1024 pixel size, the sky has taken a beating but the image is still very usable.

2021-04-17 Sophie Ryder, Sitting

Another YSP exhibit with the Superheadz. Reduced from 1.3MB to 32kB. These scans are pretty big so I cut the colour to save a bit of data. Fun fact - The League Of Gentlemen originally met here when it was a college back in the 80s.

2021-04-11 John Rideal House

Being an ex-mining town, Barnsley has more than it's fair share of industrial injuries claimants. So much so in fact that the Department for Work and Pensions felt fit to build a huge office in the town centre in order to process said claims. I give you John Rideal House or the Barnsley Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit Centre, as it is lovingly refered to by the DWP. Shot with my Olympus EE-2 half frame camera, the original scan came in at 380.6kB. I have reduced the size to 32.4kB.

2021-04-03 Anthony Caro, Promenade

A permanant exhibit at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, taken with my Superheadz Ultra Wide and Slim. 1.3MB was reduced to 27.3kB via GIMP. YSP was a merely a wildlife park when I was a kid and as such was free to visit. In order to pay for the exhibits an entry charge has now been levied (£7) which is great value if you want to see them, not so much if you just liked the walk. As a result of this locals tend not to visit anymore and the park is generally full of tourists. I should add that those in know can get in free via "alterative" routes !!

2021-03-27 Old Picture House

I took this with the Lomo LC-A and the lab kindly provided a set of lo-res thumbs with with prints. I only had to reduce the quality slightly in order to achieve 31.2Kb (from 82kB). The building itself was a cinema during the mid 1900s, then was a bingo hall before becoming a warehouse/storage facility. It has undergone considerable refurbishment of late and is used as distribution hub for posh coffee. I understand that the top floor is to be opened as a cafe-lounge at some point in the near future which would be welcome. Not sure if I prefer this size res over bigger, although the image is more natural looking - it seems to have little character.

2021-03-20 Hogwarts Bridge

Ok this is an image from a mobile phone camera but since i've reduced it to 37.6kB already - i'm using it. I've visited HarryPotterLand twice but must admit I'm no huge Potterfan. That said the tour is very interesting and adds a bit of background to the films. This is the Hogwarts Bridge, originally at 685 kB - Gimp has done a decent job. I think the key to further reduction lies in lowering the resolution. I'll try this next week.

2021-03-13 New Street

Slightly over budget at 36.3kB and taken with an Olympus Pen EE-2, I took these images whilst out walking around my village. Originally at 1.3MB, I again used GIMP to reduce the size. Many of the houses date back to the 19th century and lack any parking facilities, hence the tight parking all the way down the street.

2021-03-06 Gimp

Another Agat shot. Taken whilst snow was down, this represents half of the original frame. The size of the original double frame was 2.4MB and I got this one down to just 30.7kB. Removal of colour saved only 2.9kB, but the resulting image looks better. The tree is ridiculously large so close to the houses !

2021-02-27 First Attempts

These images were taken with my Belomo Agat 18K half frame camera. I compressed it using Gimp. It is still quite large at 98kb. The shop was in use in the 1980s but is falling to pieces now. The building itself is probably 200 years old.

Old disused butchers in Staincross.

I took this one with a Lomo-LCA and used an online automated service for compression. The sculpture is very lifelike and is huge, around 4 meters high. At 39kb I'm very happy with the result, I shall attempt to reach this size manually using Gimp for future images.
