Took a trip to Petaluma to visit a friend's new house. On
the way there, I took a break at Muffin Mania in San Rafael
and some of the goodwills on the route. At Red Whale Coffee
I played a couple games of pinball before finishing the
journey to Petaluma. I played with the goats and sheep. I
socialized with humans. I passed successfully as a fascist
twice in Secret Hitler. On the road I listened to Mythos
and 1936 from Centuries of Sound.
I've missed a few days here, but I've been spending the
evenings repainting a very, very large deck. There were no
major wildfires that swept the area around the 4th of July
so things have gone well. My evenings after painting are
essentially spent playing Caves of Qud.
It hit 115 degrees F here today. I lost a company chess
tournament but it was good fun. I caught part of a Zoom
session on weeding held by the Nevada County Master
Gardeners. They made me feel better about pulling all of
the scotch broom in my yard.
Experimenting with using a whole house fan. Had an oak in
the front yard taken down today. I actually don't miss it
as much as I thought I would. It will mulch my yard.
Started sending weather aprs data. Pretty fun.
Woke up to find deer had ravaged my raised beds with a very
suspicious bit of tomato left on the ground. I can't really
blame them, I left the gate to the yard open. Maybe when I
make a concerted effort to plan out the horticulture and
productive gardens I will take more steps to defend the
crops but for now I simply smile and shake my head at the
cornstalk they nibbled clean off. From whole-house fan
experiments I was able to go a full day without using the
AC despite it hitting 105F outside.
I have acquired a sweetheart blueberry bush. My hope is
that the deer leave it alone long enough for its second
fruit-bearing season. Spent some time setting up the new
UPS system for the servers and slapping pi-hole and the
raspberry pi that just came in the mail. I'm surprised
by how terribly slow commands run, but the network
performance is fine enough. I happened upon a book sale
while downtown. Booktown Books may be one of the coolest
book stores I've ever come across. When I get a bike I
may buy the store out, book by book. But for today I got
a couple obscure leaflets, an old guide to Chicago and the
island of Java, and a guide to trellises. On a day that
I'm bored that trellis-creation project may happen. For
now I've still got the deck painting and the job of
spreading the mulch of that faithfully departed oak tree.
Gave up on pihole today after repeated performance issues
and I'm trying out just a vanilla dnsmasq setup in a BSD
jail + a long block list. Makes it a little bit harder
to update, but not really by much. I started to map out
the garden in preparation for next year but that's so
much work. I guess I need to approach it piecemeal.
I had to touch the Makefile for a C-based binary build
today. Someone told me how to do it but I still felt like
I had no idea what I was doing. Got a package of junk from
my bedroom that my mother sent alongside a draft of our
family's ancestry. Some fun old concert flyers in there. In
D&D, our party was greeted by a wizard-turned-sheep seeking
to return to their true form. Very fun session of punching
bears. Hauled more mulch today. The pile has started to
compost which isn't exactly what I wanted but I'll take it.
Went to see Space Jam 2 at the theater today. First time
being at a theater in two years or so. This theater is
small and a bit dingy, but all the better in my opinion.
Honestly enjoyed the film despite the cringey feel good
seens that had Y audibly sucking in air through her teeth.
Had a nice conversation with my neighbor about neighborhood
things-- visiting the nearby HOA neighborhood for a garage
sale always makes me appreciate the more self-sufficient
neighborhood we live in. Smoke from the Dixie Fire has
been wafting over here in midday which cools down the harsh
sun but adds some foreboding. Back to work pulling Scotch
Broom.
I fouled up a nextcloud upgrade and nuked my instance. I
lost some work-related notes and a cheat sheet of commands
I used for archiving shit. Nothing too complicated but it
really ruined my Sunday.
A nice Saturday, visited a flea market that was way too
big. It was a pretty hot day so I didn't dawdle. Made a
mental note to return in the fall. On the way home we
stopped at the Folsom City Zoo. None of the animals were
out, but the park was pretty empty and a nice breeze
made the stop well worth it. Note to self: the rest of
Folsom is a suburban sprawl hellscape.
