I spent some time watching one of my friends complete a
virtual biochem lab. Couldn't help thinking it would be
cooler in VR, but at least I got to experience from across
the country. Tonight, will I have the chutzpah to put
together a cloud-hosted email server?
Started packing today and found the Amazon boxes I've been
religiously stashing away in the closet are inadequate in
volume to truly be that effective as moving boxes.
Nonetheless, got a few more boxes packed before embarking
on a mail server adventure.
After a brief struggle, I managed to get my email server
up. I can at last retire the old noisy PC in my LACK rack
and save it for a rainy day. Took a walk down Telegraph
which I haven't done in awhile. Picked up some German food
from Hofkuche which I'd never actually tried. I suppose I
rarely get the desire to eat at restaurants when I'm not
with a group of people.
Played entirely too much valheim today but I guess it kept
me from compulsively packing up the apartment a month
early. I wrapped up a watercolor painting today and decided
that I think I can take a break from that for awhile.
So now, the pressing project is the Nullbrook rewrite.
Valheim and Nullbrook development again today. I also
bought home insurance today. Very, very expensive home
insurance. Wildfire areas suck
Had a pretty fun/laid back day at work in which at our
regular tea time social hour we shared exploits of
hacking/running into law enforcement. Did some research
into the Internet situation at our new place and I have
been pleasantly surprised by the number of ISP options.
While there's only one highspeed provider now, there look
to be two more in the next year or so with one bringing
fiber!
Finally decided to fix my CDN configuration. Wow what a
difference. Maybe I should read the fucking manual. Took a
trip to the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse. It was a
massive let down-- during quarantine they cleaned up the
place and all of the interesting things seem to have
disappeared.
I caught the last couple hours of the Love Byte demo party.
Hakumei and Mikochi is a fantastic little anime.
Continued First and Last Men on my walk downtown today and
finally reached the Second Men. The story is terribly
cyclic though I suppose that's to be suspected. There's a
seemingly limited understanding of evolution and perhaps a
hint of eugenics but anything before the midcentury should
be taken with a grain of salt, I suppose. The whole second-
men fucking animals bit was a wee strange as well.
My old notetaking system, Trillium Notes finally started to
show strain from heavy use. Decided the try out NextCloud
since there's a plugin on my NAS. Jesus what an amazing
piece of software. Starting with the markdown editor, one
day I'll set up the calendar
I set up the calendar
Signed closing docs on the home and tried the caprese
sandwich at Oaklandia Cafe. A+. While taking out the trash
this evening, I found someone had thrown away an old
Japanese Le Gran telescope. It's missing the eyepiece but
this is such perfect timing given we'll be moving out to
an area with significantly less light pollution soon. I got
some help retrieving my body in Valheim so all set for the
weekend.
Spent much of the day playing video games but went out
after sunset to a party held down around Jack London. Some
good, wholesome rave tunes and a decent crowd. It's been
a while.
Another, final trip to Grass Valley before closing. Began
an investigation to the endeavour that is extending a
service line to the house. Stopped by Flour Garden Bakery
for coffee and a bagel on the way. I have a feeling that
won't be the last time we visit. Listened to a few more
hours of the First and Last Men. It's finally getting a
bit interesting and science-fictiony rather than political
sciencey.
Actually closed on the house today. Got on the phone with a
couple of ISPs and bought a new set of routers/APs for the
house. It'll be interesting to see if I can get the LAN
to do anything interesting while avoiding irritating
everyone else in the house. Nothing like bringing a little
bit of work with me on my vacation. Maybe trying out some
Hylics 2 this evening.
Comcast informed me that they will not serve the address
that they claim to serve. While I won't have broadband at
the new place, at least I won't have to pay that fucking
evil company. Plus I get a valid reason to file a complaint
with the California Public Utility Commission and the FCC!
Finally updated the Mastodon instance to 3.3.0. First time
I've tried updating the server, so far so good. Update:
I did it. Update later: I broke it but then fixed it.
Hashes are hard.
Took a trip to the Oakland Zoo, but our favorite exhibits--
the frogs and insects, were still closed. Nonetheless, we
had a nice day sitting in the shade, doing a crossword and
watching the monkeys.
Packing the last box from the office and tried to find a
place to offload a bunch of old security textbooks. I kept
a couple though I find it increasingly difficult to focus
on reading a physical textbook when the Internet is at hand
to answer any question. As always, enjoying SPAZ Radio.
