The Valve Index came in the mail today. I'll get to enjoy
setting that up in my tiny apartment this evening.
Had dinner at the small family-run Korean place down the
street. Like actually had dinner there, outside in the
little skid huts. I've never been much for eating out at
restaurants but it was nice to have professionally
prepared food once again.
Feeling ever so slightly more disenchanted with federated
social media. I think its greatest benefit has been
helping me find RSS feeds that I find interesting. I'm
about to start on Low Tech Magazine's back catalog. At
the same time trying to resist the urge to buy more books.
Some items I've listed on eBay have bids, my junk
collection is going in the correct direction.
Finally got around to contacting a realtor and a mortgage
loan company. It's hard not to get excited about buying
ones first home. Calming myself by continuing my
watercolor pieces. Sold a few items that won't
be making the trip to wherever we move. The Linux audio
gods brought me through the tempest that was getting the
Valve Index to receive sound from Ubuntu. Steps required:
- plug headset USB into a USB 3.0 port
- fuck around in pavu control to disable the default
hdmi audio source
Time to waste so much time.
Spent way too much time sewing a button this morning before
travelling down to San Jose for a small family Tet
celebration. I was given an ao dai that actually looked
pretty good. I'm so bad at rummy kub though.
A day that I caught up on sleep
Walked to downtown Oakland again and played Hylics for a
bit. It is very good.
Writing clerihews for a Valentines Day gift. A quaint
medium but I feel like I could constantly make them
better. I don't think that's the point though.
It rained today. While enjoying the weather on the porch
I noticed that a nectarine seed I had planted a month ago
has now sprouted. Neat!
Took one last trip to the office today to gather everything
I hadn't already taken away. Even starting packing some
boxes. Spent the evening with hot chocolate and Yuru Camp.
I got up early enough to justify a decent walk around
Piedmont. I ended up in the Rose Garden, damp with
yesterday's rain. I think the shoes have finally worn in.
Picked up a couple comics and a set of Pokemon cards from
Dr. Comics & Mr. Games and some bread from the Piedmont
Grocer. Surprisingly enough sunlight in the day to feel
like I could get more accomplished. I suppose if I ever
have a proper plot of land, I'll be able to synchronise my
circadian rhythm with the sunrise and all that jazz. This
evening I took an old bathtowel and repurposed it with love
into a couple smaller squares to be used for drying/wiping
down paintbrushes.
As I was cropping photos from a photo album I scanned sheet
by sheet, I realized the photos, coming from an American
tourist in Munich, were sufficiently recognizable that I
could Google answers to what the buildings, fountains and
monuments were. It felt like a little guided tour of
Munich. It's the little things that get you through
quarantine. I also updated the gemlog layout based on the
recommendations laid out by this subscriptions best
practices doc:
Took a trip up to Grass Valley to look at houses. I won't
get my hopes up, but we do have a place in mind. It's hard
to describe the feeling of dread I felt when we had to come
back to the city. Maybe also the fact I had two late nights
in a row at work.
Yo our offer on that house got accepted.
Been playing an unhealthy amount of Valheim. It's just so
well balanced... Finished Waste Tide today. As my first
entry into Chinese science fiction, I must say something
didn't land. I maybe enjoyed 30 minutes of the book and
found none of the characters enjoyable or even interesting.
Maybe an issue with translation or just the fact the author
was pretty young when he wrote it. Too damn many
adjectives.
SPAZ radio Thursdays are great, Portland's Most Unwanted
does a live set, chat is active. Just finished a round of
d&d with some small progress and plenty of good fun. Had
some time to calm down and draw.
Amazing day. This morning I got up at 7am and drove up to
Grass Valley to tag along in the home inspection. I was a
bit early so I got coffee downtown and was astonished that
it was only $8 for a cappuccino and a sandwich. At the
house, I followed the inspector, Kelly, around the property
asking unending questions about the best way to keep the
place in shape. He was thorough and really made me feel
great about this purchase. I'm more stoked than ever to
own this place. I started the Last and First Men during the
car ride and despite being 2 hours into the audiobook, he's
still droning on about continental politics. Maybe the
forward was right that I should skip to Chapter 4 off the
bat.
