Some time ago I insisted that The Player start buying everything DRM-free. The Player took some convincing, but after pointing out that we had to re-buy books when we went from Kindle to Kobo, or switching from Audible.com to Audiobooks.com, the Player finally saw the light!! (some Sylvan persuasion helped too).
For ebooks going DRM-free can limit your choices. For example, I haven't seen DRM-free versions of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings out there. But sometimes you can buy DRM-free versions of books straight from the publisher. It is always worth going and checking it out.
For example, No Starch Press sells their books DRM-free directly from their site. For people who like Dave Ramsey (finance guy), his books are available DRM-free as well (links below). So whether you want fiction or non-fiction, you can go straight to the publisher, and maybe you can find the books you want.
Also, while I haven't seen a *ton* of mainstream books on the site, smashwords.com has a lot of DRM-free books for sale, including some from Brandom Sanderson, who is a really good author.
There are a lot of indie authors publishing on Smashwords, and many of the books are really good! When I get some of my stories finished, that is probably where I am going to go to sell my books.
You kind of get a bit of everything there. The front page usually has a lot of romance, so if that is not your thing you will need to go into the menus to look for Sci-fi, Fantasy, Mystery, or whatever.
Finding mainstream audiobooks DRM-free is easier. For audiobooks, the Player and I now buy our books from estories.com . Once you buy, you can download a zip file of the book directly on your computer, and extract it where you want to use it.
Estories also has apps for iOS and Android, but I listen to the audiobooks on my Linux computer, or my Pinephone (if I am exercising).
On my Linux computer, I use Cozy (link at bottom of page). That doesn't work great in mobile-mode on the Pinephone yet, so on the Pinephone I just use the music player Lollypop.
Of course there is always the choice of buying a physical book! I'll do this before I buy a book wrapped in DRM, which limits what I can read it on. If you don't mind lugging a few books around with you, this is probably the best reading experience :)
If you have any sites that sell DRM-free books that you recommend, let me know! I'm sure there are tons out there.
