Linux is the Way

December 03, 2020

I've been using Linux full time at work and at home for more than a year. Prior to that I was using Linux at work full time for about 2 years after a Windows update reset all my custom tiles in the Start menu. Windows pissed me off for the last time that day. But at home I was still a Mac user.

Using Linux at work and watching videos on YouTube about it and wanting to get back into building my own PC's like I used to do led me to switch away from Mac's at home to Linux. I'm glad I did too. Apple is getting really bad in the area of control over your computers these days with their T2 and M1 chips. I don't like the direction they're going, and they've been going this way for a long time.

I really enjoy customizing my computer to my tastes and needs and with a Mac you can't do much at all. Back in the day we could at least customize the Dock and it's icons, but that got scuttled by Apple too.

Linux allows me to have total control over my machine and it's software. I love the Unix philosphy of do one thing and do it well. The open-source community is amazing and let's the users have that 'the sky is the limit' type of experience. If I don't like something about my setup I am free to change or fix it to my liking.

Using Arch Linux (Arco Linux to be precise) is wonderful and it has been my favorite distrobution above all. What I enjoy the most is it's rolling release update method. I get software updates to the core and any software packages on a daily basis. That ensures that my operating system and software packages are always up-to-date. The updates usually take seconds, maybe a minute at worst to download and install. Compared to Windows and Mac who can take an hour or more to update, this is a dream. I can update and keep on working and never have to worry about waiting a long time and hoping that the huge update doesn't break my system.

Another thing I enjoy about Linux is most of the programs I've found to replace Mac/Windows programs are far better to use. One of my favorite packages is CMUS, which is a terminal based music player. It's exceptionally simple and easy to use. The bloated iTunes program is such a mess and always borked up my music files and I'd spend hours and hours trying to clean it up.

Linux is the way.
