Conspiracy Theories

2021-12-23

I've really been enjoying learning about all kinds of conspiracy theories lately. Not in a tin foil hat sort of way, but more in a deep lore sort of way if that makes sense. It's fun to just think "what if".

These are some quick notes on ones I find interesting (but not necessarily true). I'm not going to spend too much time trying to debunk each one because I find that ruins some of the fun. Later on I may make another list or two with more obscure theories, or even make a dedicated post going in depth with any theories that deserve it.

Dead Internet Theory

There's not much to explain here but the main idea is that a majority of the internet activity you see is driven by bots.

This one I think is to some extent one of the more believable ones on the list. One recent report I found estimates that bots are responsible for around 40% of all web traffic. Then you also look at how heavily botted and manipulated platforms like Reddit are and suddenly the dead internet theory might not be that far-fetched.

The Titanic Didn't Sink

There was a ship that sank in April 1912, but it wasn't the Titanic. This theory claims the Titanic was swapped with its sister ship, the Olympic, and that ship is the one that sank as part of an insurance scam.

One of the draws of this one I think is that it threatens to change everything you know about a major event that happened over 100 years ago, and it does so by basically just saying "yeah businesspeople can be pretty corrupt sometimes".

Most of the evidence in support of this theory refers to rumors and eyewitness accounts from the ship's sinking, as well as a few minor physical similarities between the Titanic and Olympic that were present for the maiden voyage but not while in the dry dock. One example is an eyewitness account that claimed the Titanic was listing to port on its voyage -- something that the Olympic was known to do after taking on damage in a previous voyage.

Of course there's also plenty of evidence that goes against this theory as well. But still you have to wonder...

Hollow Earth

Forget flat earth -- how about a whole extra world underneath the one we inhabit?

I could make a whole post about this one if I wanted so I won't go too in depth here. The main idea is there's an unseen world with its own creatures and ecosystem hiding beneath ours. Several secret entrances are theorized to exist in various places such as Antarctica. Some people know about the existence of these entrances and have carried out successful expeditions. If you've seen that King Kong and Godzilla movie it's basically that.

Simulation Theory

We're living in The Matrix. One of the things I love about this theory is that if it did somehow turn out to be true, would we be able to find ways to exploit it? Find glitches? Cheat codes?

Mandela Effect

One of the more well known theories. You know how a lot people sometimes misremember major events in the same way as one another? Yeah, turns out that's a side-effect of two nearly identical but slightly different multiverses merging together. Some people retain their memories from the first multiverse, and others from the second.

My favorite conspiracy theories are ones that get at the nature of the world/universe itself and multiverses are too much fun to think about.
