[2021-03-16]..1st.week.on.gemini.gmi

Hi everyone, it's been almost a week since I am playing around with

gemini (hosting this server, not just browing gemini pages).

I am writing down below a few things I think could be helpful on what

I've learned so far.

Lagrange

Lagrange(1) is a gorgeous gemini client. Let's be very honest, if you

want a terminal client, bombadillo(2) is awesome and I am loving it. But

if you fancy a graphical interface, then Lagrange is definitively a

strong option. Easy, fast, slick, smooth, gorgeous...plenty of

adjective can apply here. *BUT* (Yeah it's always about the but...) by

default, and that's just my very personal opinion, it does render pages

in a weird way that got me quite confused. So first of all if you're

using it I would recommend to go into the Preferences and set it up

with:

Style -> Monospace body "Gemini"
      -> Line width: "Window"

The rest are cosmetic changes, adjust as you like. But in terms of page

rendering I think those two options should be the default one as it's

clearly targetting the Geminispace.

(1) Lagrange

(2) Bombadillo

Capsule to get started

As of March 2021 there's already a ton of content on gemini. And

surprisingly there's a ton of nice and easy way to find new content.

From lovely index/directory, to very decent search options.

The two you shouldn't miss are:

medusae.space *the* gemini directory

geminispace.info gemini search engine

And if you're still at a stage of looking for the best client or server

to suit your need, here's a good place to look at:

Lupa? Crawlers & Co

You should pretty quickly see in your server logs a lot of visit from

2001:41d0:302:2200::180 or 193.70.85.11 this is the Lupa, gemini

crawler. More information and all the interesting stats are here:

Current stats

To get yourself indexed, forget about GUS.guru which is stuck since "Index

updated on: 2020-12-06" . I am not being very successfull with

geminispace.info either, it does warm it takes a few days, but even

though I could see an update from today 16th of March nothing from what

I've manually added last week. I need to check I am probably doing

something wrong.

The importance of the trailing slash "/"

The TLS certificate exchange appears to be the part of Gemini which eats

the most bandwidth. When linking to directories in your gemtext, you

should always add the tailing slash at the of your path. Otherwise the

server will treat it as a redirect. Which is something we want to avoid.

I realized this thanks to bombadillo which is asking by default:

Follow redirect (y/n): gemini://clemat.is/saccophore/library/ezines/?

And I was like, redirect? I am just pointing to a local folder. Some

clients don't show this so you might not notice.

So, to summarize:

The wrong way to do it: => library/ezines ezines
The right way to do it: => library/ezines/ ezines

subscription friendly

This is all very much "work in progress" but thanks to someone pointing

out on Mastodon, there's a "convention" to make your gemlog

"subscrition" friendly. Any additional comments, tips&tricks please let

me know.
