So my wife is currently being induced so its eviction time for little baby Evie. I'll periodically update this as we move along.
The nurse came in and administered the medicine so this show is now officially on the road!
Its been a crazy few hours. my wife went into labor roughky a couple hours after getting the medicine which is absurdly fast. Been up trying to console her through the pain. Finally got the epidural in and now shes resting peacefully. going to try to nap for a few myself.
So she's progressing super fast with no additional medicine. She's already at 8cm dilation. At the rate we're going, little Evie will be here around noonish. Super excited which is good because I'm running on about an hour and a half's sleep right now. Probably going to crash super hard at some point, but we'll see.
It has been a *crazy* 24 hours. My wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl at 9:29 am yesterday morning. Both she and her mother are doing great. She's pretty small, only about 5 1/2 pounds (~ 2.5 kg) and 18 1/4 " long (~ 43 cm).
I was up for about 30 hours without sleep and her first few hours were so full of activity (visits from nurses and doctors, feedings, diaper changes) that I really haven't had the time or energy to post about the progress here as it was happening.
Early this morning, I managed to sneak in a few hours of sleep here and there and, in combination with a large cup of espresso and a nice long shower, I no longer feel like a shambling zombie. Unfortunately, my wife wasn't so lucky in the sleep department. She felt like one of us had to be conscious so she volunteered. She's probably been up continuously for 48 hours now.
We had a huge rush of various people visting today too so she wasn't able to get a nap in. The good news is that the rush appears to be over now. I'm taking over keeping an eye on Evie (her full name is Evelyn btw, I don't think I've mentioned that) until she's had a good nap.
I'm adjusting to the new responsibilties pretty well I think. I'm certainly not very adept at the diaper changes but it's not hard or particularly gross. Even the sticky black poo that newborns have (I believe it's called 'meconium') isn't too bad to clean up. Just takes a lot of wipes. I definitely have to work on my swaddling and feeding technique (we're formula feeding) though.
Little Evie's a trooper though. She's only a little over 24 hours old now and she's barely cried or complained at all. Also, despite being *very* small, she's fairly strong and stubborn. It's quite the ordeal trying to get new diapers on her as she likes to kick at it as you're trying to do the little velcro wings.
The good news is that, despite her size, little Evie is very healthy and she'll be coming home with us tomorrow unless something goes wrong (fingers crossed, nothing will.) I'm looking forward to introducing her to our hoard of animals and seeing their reactions.
Her maternal grandmother, or Busha, as she prefers (Polish word for it) will be waiting for her to give her lots of love and kisses. Her paternal grandmother (she prefers Mimi) will be over before too long as well. It'll be nice to have a good rest.
