I only recently stumbled across the Gemini protocol. To be precise, first, I stumbled across LBRY late last year, then came across some videos about Gemini there, which eventually led me to Gemini, and ultimately to this gemlog.
After I first became aware of LBRY, I didn't know exactly what to make of it. At first I was taken with the idea: an alternative to the Goliath YouTube, maybe even YouTube's David? However, the topics prominently featured there did not appeal to me: crypto currency and lots of right-wing conspiracy theories. However, I quickly discovered niches that appealed to me: videos about emacs, various terminal emulators, tiling window managers–and I even found a bread baker posting content there! Last but not least, to complete my experience, I just had to create and upload my own video–er voilà :
My first video uploaded to LBRY (.bashrc on multiple systems)
Now before I stumbled upon Gemini, I first rediscovered my fascination for emacs. I first had to refresh my muscle memory regarding C-x C-whatever and M-x whoknows, of course. Fortunately, there is evil-mode!
But now, after hours of org-mode sessions, which mainly dealt with the correct font setup for org-mode, on to Gemini.
I love Markdown! Simple syntax, human readable and writable, just plain text with limited markup options. But Markdown turns into HTML faster than you think. And with HTML comes CSS. And where CSS is, web browsers with their sprawling, memory-hungry rendering engines are not far behind.
Enter GEMINI.
GEMINI
Here I am. I travel lightweight. I have an even simpler syntax than my older relative Markdown. You can just put me in a text file, UTF-8 encoded if you like, and send me on my way.
ME
And your appearance? Who takes care of your appearance?
GEMINI
The client. In the best case, the client is freely configurable by the user. And thus also my appearance. I look the way the reader wants me to look! No strings attached.
Exit GEMINI.
ME
And that's how I like it, that's how it should be.
Exit ME. For now.
