Today is International Mother Language Day

Some brave people gave lives for their native language back in 1952, 21st February on Bangladesh. It seems almost unbelievable that people had to lose their lives just for the right to speak/write/read their own language. The day is now internationally recognized by UNESCO to remind us how powerful the right to speak our own language can be.

[Twenty first February colored with the blood of my brothers

How can I forget

Soaked in tears of hundreds of mothers who lost sons

How can I forget

Colored with the blood of my golden country

How can I forget]

This is in Bangla, the language for which they died. 💐

This is from a song prepared in memory of the martyrs.

The whole lyrics can be accessed here

Thanks to them the language is now preserved and there are loads of literature, textbooks, speeches that are being created by Bangla native speakers. Now it's the 7th most spoken language in the world.

There is an abstract sculpture called Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This was built to commemorate the event of the sacrifice of 1952. Five flat, hollow pillars with patterns inside that resembles jail. These five pillars are probably a symbol for Abdus Salam, Abul Barkat, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar and Shafiur Rahman - the 5 people who sacrificed their lives. There were also hundred others injured when police fired at them. The middle one is the widest and tallest and at the center there is a Red circle to symbolize a new Sun with new possibilities.

We have so much to learn from this tragic event. The most important thing is that it was done by students, with support of general people. I've read on an interview of a participant that political parties were not hugely involved in the rally, at least it was not their first interest.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia:

To demolish the protest, the government of Pakistan outlawed public meeting and rallies. The students of the University of Dhaka, with the support of the general public, arranged massive rallies and meetings. On 21 February 1952, police opened fire on rallies. Abdus Salam, Abul Barkat, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar and Shafiur Rahman died, with hundreds of others injured. This was a rare incident in history, where people sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue.

So it was not done with political gains in mind, but with sacred intentions.

Sacrifices like these remind us what sacred sacrifices can bring for our lives. We can't be thankful enough to them for what they did. Lots of respect to the martyrs and others who were in line to lose their lives for this wonderful language. It is for their sacrifice, Bangalees can speak their language with pride. "How can I forget" their sacrifices?
