obligatory mechanical keyboard thread
what are all the cool kids using these days?

My Ducky One 2 Mini with Cherry MX Blues still going strong
Anonymous ยท 4mo ยท No.55
planck as a daily driver for about 6 years now, but i do have the corneish zen preorder that i am stoked for. the person responsible for it has been extremely responsive and transparent throughout the whole process it's so unusual for an mk gb
wrt switches, cherry browns were perfect for me for a long time though i guess that's a target for internet shaming. at one point i did change to using kailh box browns and they feel a lot better and don't have as much wiggle

I appreciate seeing blues and browns in this thread. I feel like I see those switches getting a ton of hate online but I always really liked them.
I try not to dive too deep into the mechanical keyboard consummerist tunnel but I did recently buy some new "Boba" silent tactile switches that I'm pretty excited to try out. A friend of mine showed them to me and they felt really nice and uh bubbly I guess is the word I'd use?
I stuck to blues when I lived alone but I switched them out for the sake of my partner when we moved in together

@55 how do you like the planck? I've always been tempted since it looks so beautiful and fun.

NTAYRT but I also have a planck and I personally love it. It is the perfect size for my midget hands and it's super portable and doesn't add visual clutter to my desk. The layout took me a bit to get used to, even coming from an ortholinear ergodox prior, but now that I'm used to it I can't imagine going back.
I got special textured keycaps for my two layer keys and it made a huge difference for me, 10/10 would recommend.
Anonymous ยท 4mo ยท No.65
the special textured keycaps in question btw, because I quite literally could not resist. I'm giving a cat a tiny high five every time I use my layers now.

@63 i absolutely love it. it was a hurdle for about one evening because my left hand kept mistaking the bottom row of keys since ortho is so different so i did some typing training and got over it quick. i found a really nice layout for myself and it's extremely comfortable. for instance my down layer makes home row into the number row and qwerty row into the symbols. up layer brings up the -=[]{} etc. it's maybe weird to try to explain, but having relatively few keys makes it nice to find the best ways for the least amount of travel

@64 @68 Well looks like I'm getting myself a Planck then! Can't wait to try it out and configure the hell out of it.

Alluminum Tofu 60% (layout with arrow keys), brass plate, lubed and filmed Gateron black inks, GMK Hennessey keycaps. I polished the Tofu case to a mirror shine (though it needs a little refresh these days), and I mounted the PCB using an o-ring sandwich screw technique, so it has a nice bounce feel to it.
Anonymous ยท 4mo ยท No.104
@73 that's great! i hope you have a lot of fun with it. i'm not sure if you're already familiar with qmk and flashing but if you haven't already been using via/vial you should give them a look. i've had better luck with certain key combos in vial https://caniusevia.com/ https://get.vial.today/
it's all configurable while you're using the keyboard, everything can be changed on the fly. sure, it's not as "cool" as modifying and compiling the firmware each time you want to change your layout, but you can do that stuff after you've played with and tested all the changes first
Anonymous ยท 4mo ยท No.105
@75 what is it you look for with switches and how did you land on the gateron black inks? i notice they only have cross stems do you experience any wiggle? do you often try out different switches?
Anonymous ยท 4mo ยท No.109
@104, wow, I am not familiar with this stuff and it looks wonderful! I have a 60% keyboard right now but there's little configuration I feel like I need to do since it already does everything I want it to do. Excited to get started on tinkering with my 40% whenever it arrives, thanks for these resources!
Anonymous ยท 4mo ยท No.110
@105 I like smooth linear switches. I've tried many switches, and Gat black inks hit a price/smoothness sweetspot. I used to use box switches, but over time have come to value smoothness more and find that wobble doesn't bother me so much. That said, Gat black inks are on the less wobbly side for non-box switches. I would try out new switches more often if (1) I had a hotswappable PCB (easy problem to solve), and (2) lubing and filming a set of switches wasn't such an emotional drain (harder problem to solve).

Well folks I've been using my Planck 40 for a week or two now and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. Mostly retrained my fingers to be fine at touch typing. Everything feels more precise, and having no travel for doing pretty much anything is great. Layers are funโI've even been able to program a dedicated key on my raise layer for the em dash, which imo should be on all keyboards. Thanks for the push everybody on here gave me!
Anonymous ยท 3mo ยท No.500
@499 that's great! having no travel makes a lot of difference. being able to write your own key functions is extremely usefulโemdashes are important.
have you already delved into buying caps and switches for it?
Anonymous ยท 3mo ยท No.501
@500 Indeed, I already have one GMK group buy in, but it won't arrive until late 2022. The turnaround time on keycaps is loooooooong. Rocking some Box Whites for now and enjoying them, but I'm sure I'll get into other switches soon enough. Any recommendations for clicky switches like the Box Whites or MX Blues?
Anonymous ยท 19d ยท No.703
Not mechanical, but i use 8vim that is a clone to 8pen.

I have a Keychron K2 with Gateron red switches that I really enjoy using. Itโs clicky and fun to type on, while not making too much noise. Iโm thinking about getting some different keycaps, but Iโd probably only replace the escape key desu
