Feeling lazy today in my lunch break, I didn't go for much of a walk, just around to one of the nearest gardens and sat in the shade, watching the fountain gurgling in the pond.
A family of Wood ducks[1] appeared, eleven of them, fairly sure it was an adult pair and their offspring so I guess they must have nested up in a tree nearby. They walked across the lawn to the edge of the pond and one by one, slowly and carefully, flopped into the water — adults first, then offspring — and once in the pond all paddled across the 4m or so to the far side then equally laboriously clambered up the lip of the pond onto the path. Once they were all out they sat down, resting. It would have been far quicker for them to walk around the pond!
