2021 highlights

2021 is coming to a close and I thought I'd take the opportunity to look back on things I did during the year. Here goes...

The biggest thing was probably getting a driver's license. Where I live getting a driver's license is not only quite complicated, it's also ridiculously expensive, especially if you have to rely on driving lessons. This is why me and most people I know put it off until it becomes absolutely necessary. In my case it getting a kid was what made me make the investment. I must admit that taking the driver's exam was one of the most stressful experiences I've had in my life and I'm so glad that it's over.

We also moved to a new apartment which we really love. We were able to get the contract for the apartment more than two years ago but had to wait for them to be done with the construction, so to finally be able to move in was a great relief.

Other things I'm happy I did this year was to finally start taking piano lessons and to setup this gemlog. Next year I aim to start an HTTP blog as well for stuff I don't mind sharing with a potentially bigger audience. However, before doing that I wanted to get into the habit of writing and starting this gemlog was a really great way of doing that. As I've written previously, I really love reading gemlogs because you can find great posts that discuss interesting topics in a personal and relaxed way.

I don't remember finishing many books this year, but I did read all of Berserk and Akira. Akira is of course a real masterpiece and the fact that the story takes place during 2020 as Tokyo prepares to hold the Olympics added to the reading experience. Berserk has some really amazing story archs, but at times it felt that there were just too many never-ending fight scenes and I would have loved for an editor to jump in and remove the pirates. Someday I'll write down my thoughts on the series as a whole.

Most of the things I've mentioned above took place during the last 6 months of the year. Can't really recall any highlights from the beginning of the year, but that might be due to the Covid-restrictions still being in effect then. A bit sad to see them return now, but hopefully things will open up again come spring.
