Oppenheim has taken two things (a teacup and fur) that, individually, are functional and evoke feelings of luxury and comfort, and combined them into a single object that is not functional and neither luxurious nor comortable. Our perception of an object is a composite of many aspects: its form factor, its colours, its texture, how we use it, the memories it evokes in us, etc. Oppenheim has broken the teacup's "identity" down into these individual components and retained some of those components, altered others and discarded others entirely. In doing so she has preserved enough of those components that we can still identify the object as a teacup, but she has changed enough of those components that the teacup is quite alien to us.
