Covid Ireland: Over 26,000 new cases confirmed with over 900 in hospital

8 Jan

The health department has confirmed over 26,000 new cases of coronavirus today.

The 26,122 figure is the highest on record, but hospital cases are well down on this time last year with 917 admitted and 83 of those in intensive care.

Today a Cork GP spoke on RTE outlining some optimism saying "we are managing and getting through it with some very difficult disruption".

Dr Mary Favier told Brendan O'Connor that "we are also seeing no one is really getting sick" despite the huge amount of daily cases at the moment.

She said: "We have had difficulty each morning to keep track of the number of positive cases yet it is not being followed through into significant illness."

She also warned that we "haven't seen the top of the surge yet" meaning more record figures could be on the way.

She urged people not to drop their guard.
