The Wild Places

2021-10-17 14:18 PST

now listening: Dirty Three - Ocean Songs - Authentic Celestial Music

I started reading Robert MacFarlane's The Wild Places, and there's a quote on page 8 from Jonathan Raban: "there was nowhere to go to be truly alone, or to have ... adventures, except to sea." It made me long for the sea, and really miss race days, especially the ones that started out foggy. I have this picture in my head that I don't think I ever caught on film (pixels?) of a brick building on one of the piers approaching South Beach Harbor, just north of Rincon Park, the fog thick as soup and the water lapping against the supports in the Bay Bridge and against the bow. There's a certain, je ne sais quois, a melancholy-tinged sort of reflection and stillness. The best way I can describe it is some combination of Authentic Celestial Music and Deep Waters from Dirty Three's Ocean Songs album.

The Wild Places

Of course, any Robert MacFarlane book is going to make me long for an adventure in the same way a Beau Miles film will.

Since I can't put it into words right now, I'll finish this out with some photos that hint at what I'm feeling.
