Looking back on 2021
It's been a pretty rough twelve months for everyone, I think, myself included. Nobody wants to think about that, though. I wanted to take some time to reflect on the good things that happened in the past year instead. I haven't done anything like this before, so this is pretty messy. This list is in rough chronological order.
- In February, I started doing (very occasional) subcontract work for a local arts center. It's nothing major (helping run network cable, being a second pair of eyes for complex configuration changes) but it has served as a much-needed break from my day job. Aside from that, it's just cool to get to work in the building (a renovated textile mill).
- I learned to enjoy being outdoors and got into hiking. Huntsville has dozens of trails within city limits, so it wasn't very difficult to find places appropriate for every difficulty level as I got better at negotiating rocky terrain and steep hills. I have some fantastic pictures from these trips; in the future I'll try to write hiking log posts and include pictures!
- I got a COVID vaccination as soon as they were readily available from the county health department in late March. It was very hard to make an appointment during the early days of general vaccine availability, but I was able to take advantage of some cancellations and get one pretty quickly.
- I learned toki pona (a minimalist constructed language) in July. It didn't take long but was a lot of fun. The speaking community is full of very cool people.
- I bought an upright piano in unbelievably good condition (almost doesn't need tuning, acceptable regulation, nothing outright broken) for an unbelievably low price ($200 including delivery).
- I found a therapist and started working on some long-standing mental health things. I cannot recommend this enough; it's been fantastic.
- I started hormone replacement therapy in September. This has been truly life-changing and easily one of the best decisions I have ever made.
- I came out as trans at work.
- I started picking up Nix and NixOS. They have been a pleasure to use and have made admin tasks in my home environment so much easier.
- I made a Gemini capsule and server software to host it! (It's this capsule and the server running it, in case that wasn't obvious.)
- I got back on XMPP and reconnected with a friend who I hadn't talked with in a while, which was very nice!
There are links to everything that seemed reasonable to link below.
Here's hoping 2022 is a better year and that I'll have a longer list to write next January!
