Purpose

I would like to learn how Radio Control works, but I also want to get a

thorough understanding of the underlying principles, history, and otherwise of

radio controlling devices.

My plan is to set some learning objectives and prepare myself to my own

satisfaction.

Objectives

1. I will be able to explain major events in radio control history

2. I will be able to define the major topics in radio control and operation

* I will be able to express the fundamental topics in radio control

and operation in understandable terms

3. I will be able to explain how to interpret and understand data from radio

control protocols and radio signals

4. I will be able to analyze different options for radio control and decide

which to use.

5. I will be able to design a radio controlled device

* I will be able to implement that design

Foreknowledge (Pre-requisites)

I already have substantial experience in designing and programming electronics

I am a licensed radio amateur technician (General is my next goal!), and I have

a Master's Degree in CyberSecurity.

Based on my foreknowledge I'm going to guess that anyone following my footsteps

might want to know the following topics:

1. Basic Electricity Theory

2. Basic Electronics construction experience

3. An understanding of the principles of

1. Transmission

2. Reception

3. Frequency Range

4. Signals and Encoding

4. Basic motors and ESC devices (It might actually help to learn about these

in parallel and I will probably do a short write up on these...)

Assignments

Now, to do this correctly, and to set some rules for myself, I'm going to

layout a couple different assignments. Obviously, I can not provide myself

an objective assessment without having the knowledge of what needs to be

learned, but what I can do is make a series of research projects to develop

the knowledge necessary, and a competency based project to get something done.

1. A paper on the history of Radio Control, it's uses, and pioneers.

2. A simple project working with motors and ESC control to writeup necessary

fundamentals of devices to be controlled.

3. An analysis of various radio control systems on the consumer market,

open source options, and a determination on which one to use.

4. Project plan for project

* Design a project using an RC controller and

* 2 Servos

* 1 Motor

* 1 ESC

* 1 non-standard device, such as a relay or build on a servo

(Like a clamp hand!)

* Develop a budget for the project

5. Design the project, and implement it within budget

Terms of Success

Ultimately, success will be measured by whether or not I can implement radio

control in a working project.
