Lately I've been caught by the quarantine vibes yet again and I'm looking for things to do. I feel like I've been getting deeper and deeper into the BSD rabbit hole as time went on. I'm completely happy with how OpenBSD works right now. It's a bit slow, certainly, but it's really simple and easy to use compared to the other operating systems that I was using prior.
However, there are also certain ideas that I wanted to pursue with regards to messing with operating systems. A few weeks ago I was messing around with Amiga emulation. It's mostly just installing and playing around with stuff, nothing technical but doing so gave me an idea.
A few months ago, I was playing around with a certain Plan 9 operating system. I installed it mostly as a curiousity and I was really impressed with the ideas that it was trying to posit. It's a much more `sensible' take on distributed systems. Having a small terminal at your lap that was able to access a more powerful computer and to be able to use its resources as if it's your own is something that I thought belonged to the future, not to the past. But it seems that this idea was already thought of and it's really a shame that there isn't that much development on this operating system.
A part of me wants to learn more about it and actually put the time and effort to learn programming to be able to make it do what I want it to do. But I don't know if I have the aptitude nor the skills to be able to do something with it.
Regardless, the spirit of tinkering lives on. Hopefully someday I will actually start picking up the books and the tools and make something worthwhile with it.
