I have a memory from college, where I was visiting a friend of mine, and we were talking about stories we were working on. Her cousin was visiting as well (an interesting guy), and he asked something like "What is this about writing stories? Who wants to write?"
To each his or her own I guess.
I love books, especially fiction. I enjoy anything from mysteries, to science fiction, to fantasy, to thrillers, to romance. I find that books are a lot more varied in their storylines than movies and television shows. While I do like reading Tolkien or Dean Koontz, I've also really come to like reading indie authors, as their stories are often much different than those by established authors.
I like to write as well, and have written everything stories about every genre I like to read, listed above. My two current projects are a ghost story and a romance... I'm wandering back and forth between the two.
There is something creating your own world, and you can fill that world with anything you can imagine - ghosts, spaceships, wizards and warlocks, dragons and dopplegangers, alien landscapes, and more. You create characters with complex personalities that you fall in love with, or that you hate. How complex that guy or girl is, the weaknesses, histories, everything is up to you.
If you have ever cried when a character has died in a book, you know what I mean :) The author builds the character, but the reader "fills in the gaps", and that character takes on life.
That's what I love about writing.
