The last word in ignorance is the man who says of an animal or plant: What good is it?
— Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac: And Sketches Here and There
I'm still alive! Here's an update on that, and more importantly on my potatoes :)
I'll not waste your time then: let's get straight to the potato news.
Previous post on my potatoes can be found here, in case you missed it
When none of the four potatoes I had planted sprouted yet halfway June, I had just about given up on them. However, just three weeks ago one of them started to grow, and has gotten pretty large by now.
As you may be able to see in the picture, I've piled more earth on top of the lower parts of the potato plant as it grew, since this supposedly increases the harvest-it forces the plant to grow through more soil, which in turn gives it more space in which to produce potatoes.
Now all that's left to do is water the plant occasionally and wait for it to start producing those sweet gold nuggets.
To fill up some empty space in my study planning, I've gotten a job. I now work forty hours a week at a small software company. I got a motorized standing desk, free fruit and can play guitar while waiting for the compiler. The vibes are really good, and I'm quite enjoying it. I don't think I would want to work full-time for a large part of my life though. Forty hours is a lot of time, and the amount of quality time spent with friends and family has diminished beyond my liking.
I'm as sick (hah) of the subject as you probably are, but it feels like it's worth mentioning: I have, after one and a half year of dealing with this pandemic, finally come down with COVID-19. The disease itself has not posed much of a problem: I've had a cold, some headaches and a bit of a sore throat, but after only four days my symptoms are already diminishing. The real problem is in the fact that I'm now stuck in quarantine: I cannot join my friends on the camping trip I was going on this week, and I have to work from home for a couple days, which I really dislike as well.
Here's to hoping vaccination rates will go up quickly: I'd love for this rubbish to be finally over.
