Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

I hadn't written in my Gemini capsule for over a month. It's not that I had forgotten about it; I've spent every day for the past month reading people's Gopherholes and Gemlogs up until the early hours of the morning. More on this later. I've found such great things!

I read the phlog that details the idea of what would later become cosmic.voyage on Tomasino's gopherhole, I loved reading the thoughts around Gopherspace prior to the creation of Gemini, especially solderpunk's musings about the state of the web and the shortcomings of Gopher.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, I have most enjoyed reading about people's lives. Even when most people use a type of anonymous handle or username, something about this medium lends itself to talking about life milestones: new jobs, moving to another city, having children, good times, bad times, and everything in between. I love that so, so much. Never had I felt such a sense of "community" on the internet even when people used real names!

Now, regarding staying up so late reading Gopher and Gemini content... that needs to stop. Recently I learned about "revenge bedtime procrastination":

Revenge bedtime procrastination is a psychological phenomenon, where people
stay up later than they desire in an attempt to have control over the night,
because they perceive themselves (perhaps subconsciously) to lack influence
over events during the day.

It's a cycle. If I feel tired and begrudgingly get through the day feeling as though I didn't get to do what I wanted (e.g. reading smallnet content), I am more likely to stay up that night doing that very thing which made me tired in the first place. Towards the beginning of the year I had really gotten a handle on my sleeping schedule, going to bed before midnight and waking up before 8am every day, but as things go back to normal and I'm required to go to places in-person rather than just working from home, most of my time is spent commuting. I wish I could have kept working from home. Without having to spend time on my long commute, I had a chance to go biking in the morning, prepare my breakfast at home, and start my day... happy. Lately I've started my days angry that I had to wake up so early just to be in traffic on an empty stomach.

I'm sorry for the rant above, I just don't see the point of doing work in-person when it could be done more effectively remotely, cutting on commuting costs, carbon footprint, and simply allowing for a healthier work-life balance.

Regardless, it's still not healthy to stay up so late and sleeping so little, so I will work on that.
