I enjoyed reading this review of Alpine Linux, a distro that I've been hearing a lot about lately. It almost makes me want to try it out, but I haven't decided where the best place to put it would be. I heard mainly that it's well-suited for virtualized servers, but I'm curious how nicely it would run on bare metal, if not on a workstation, then at least on the server.

Of course, there's lots of other server operating systems out there, including other Linux distros, which probably are just lovely. If I had to set up a Linux server right now, I would probably think of Debian first.

One feeling I got when reading the post, is that this description of an ideal operating system seems to fit BSD systems very well. You could just copy-paste the review and change the words "Alpine Linux" to "FreeBSD", and it would explain why I use that. This also reminds me of a post that (I believe) was written by the same author some time ago describing the perfect messaging platform, which I believe very accurately described what XMPP is.

Oftentimes one comes up with great ideas for something. Usually good ideas are the ones that someone thought of a long time ago, so it's always good to know about prior work in any field.
