Dublin whitewater rafting plans set to be scrapped

Plans to build a whitewater rafting course in Dublin city centre look set to be scrapped.
The Chief Executive of Dublin City Council is proposing to abandon the controversial project, which would have cost more than €20m, citing a lack of financial and public support.
According to the council's Capital Programme 2022-2024, which will be discussed at a meeting later tonight, there has been significant hostility towards the project and it has been unable to convince the various State funding bodies to support the project.
The report, from the council's Chief Executive Owen Keegan, also says there has been a ''considerable amount of negative commentary related to this project [...] that appears impossible to reverse and that has undermined the planned funding of the project".
Councillors had initially approved plans for the George's Dock development in 2019, but the project has attracted much criticism.
In a statement today, Dublin City Council said that in the report on the Capital Programme, "the Chief Executive is proposing to the Elected Members that we proceed with the two Quayside buildings and it is proposed to not proceed with the white water rafting project".
In June, the tendering process for the project was been postponed because of increases in construction costs.
According to the council, the proposed redevelopment consisted of a whitewater rafting course and a swift water rescue training facility with an urban street scene for use by the emergency services.
It would also have facilities for kayaking and canoeing, as well as a swimming and polo pool within the derelict outer basin at George's Dock.
