Walk in the park: Initiative aims to encourage exercise
Monday, 29 Nov 2021 11:05
A new pilot project by Dublin City Council aims to encourage more people to get outdoor exercise in Dublin 8 parks.
The project will use a smartphone app to reward park visitors with new 'Civic Dollars' for spending in participating parks from Inchicore to the Liberties.
The 'dollars' can then be exchanged for goods and services from local businesses, or they can be given to local community organisations.
The scheme has already been successfully rolled out in Belfast and more than 3,000 hours of activity have been registered through the app.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alison Gilliland, said that the project will initially run for five months in five parks.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, she explained that the app has mobile data on it and while it is completely anonymised, it will allow the council to see the use of the various parks and which ones are more popular.
This will enable the council to increase infrastructure and to see if more parks are needed for the public. Ms Gilliland said that the 'CivicDollars' app is already in operation.
"You can go to your apps, download civic dollars and get walking," she said.
Smart D8 has launched its largest pilot project to date with the introduction of a new '@CivicDollars' community currency to encourage the use of public parks and drive better health outcomes for the community. https://t.co/RVnrVFHL7D#Dublin8 #Community #SmartD8 pic.twitter.com/DYl5z4LP3V
