The image itself is a collage.
It consists of three parts:
This is exact source:
The fragment present in the collage has been overlayed over the original
This is the cropped result:
Though the original researcher didn't realize the exact meaning of this, the following commenter did:
UnknownJuly 23, 2018 at 8:06 PM First row is MXXXIII which is 1033 in roman numbers. Second row is MMMCCCI which is 3301 in roman numbers. All you have to do is flip or rotate the image
A different analysis by "lurker" suggests that this may be a scaled-down image of a Cicada.
Either way, there's some reference to Cicada placed right where the Newton's fingers are pointing.
It's been noted that a similar fragment of "Newton" is used at this cover:
Pierre Thuillier, "Science et société"
This is exact source:
A Cicada logo is superimposed over this fragment in the collage.
Looks like standard logo 3301 uses. We dont have the exact source of Cicada logo. People belive that it's source is some old zoology book, but that rumor was never proven with any link.
The image on the collage looks slightly enlarged.
And horizontaly MIRRORED! (this is first time 3301 used mirrored logo. Note that Ancient days on which logo is superimposed is not mirrored but rotaed for 180°)
Best resolution logos we have are one from png XORed in 2013 and one that was used on CICADA OS for abkground in Format LSS 16
$ file mnt/boot/isolinux/splash.rle mnt/boot/isolinux/splash.rle: SYSLINUX' LSS16 image data, width 640, height 300
That gives:
e = 65537
n = 75579125746085351644267182920580212556413102071876330957950694457000592
10248050757270234679993673844203148013173091173786572116639
(n is a long number continuing on the next line, not division of two numbers).
n is 130 decimal digits long, or 429 bit.
It was needed to factorize n.
To do that, solvers:
8 hours of factorizing, 23 hours after finding n, the factors were found.

Using these primes, the private key was obtained and this Perl script was used to decrypt the message.
