Bikes

I have always loved riding bikes. My first was a Raleigh Tomahawk, then BSA Sirocco, Raleigh Grifter and the Raleigh Team Banana. These were in my childhood, I have never owned a BMX.

Grown up bikes followed - Kona Fire Mountain, Kona Blink, BTwin 200, Planet X Pro-Carbon and Spa Elan.

I am now an avid audaxer and occasional bicycle tourist.

This page will be dedicated to all things bicycle.....

1984 Revell Ritmo

Got this for £100 from Pete on ebay. He found it in a skip and started to restore it over lockdown. Looks like he's rattle can sprayed it in its original colour. The wheels and tyres are new along with the pedals and all the cables. He told me he prefers MTB riding and decided to get shut. When I first saw it I had no idea what it was and spent a long while researching this rare brand. As I understand it, Revell bikes were built and distributed by Madison in the early 80's. There were 3 models - Rapide (race), Ritmo (light tourer) and Romany (tourer). Frames were sourced from various UK builders and Madison used their own components to complete the bikes. Judging by the stamp on the BB as well as the lugwork on the frame I'm sure this one is a Mercian frame. More info to follow....

Planet X Pro-Carbon

My "fast" bike. Carbon frame and forks, rim brakes, 20 speed SRAM Rival drivetrain. 25mm tyres on Campag Khamsin wheels. The bike weight is around 8.5kg and currently sports a Fizik Arione saddle. Bought this for £800 in a sale after the Yorkshire TDF Grand depart. The only way to ride this bike is flat out and it flys uphill. For longer rides however, arm fatigue tends to build and therefore I now intend to use for sub 50km only.

Audax

I really ought to add more to this page but for the moment I am more interested in riding than writing about riding ! In the meantime here is the link to Audax UK for anyone interested.

Spa Elan

My "best" bike. Steel frame, carbon forks, cable disk brakes, 30 speed shimano 105. Full mudguards over 32mm tyres, the rear rack has a carradice bag on it here. Rides more like an MTB than a road bike and is very comfortable. Super heavy at 15kg I bought this last October and have used it on every ride since. It's certainly no hill climber but even after 100km I feel fresh on this bike, hoping to go over 200km on it this year as well as do several tours with full camping gear.
