Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters

01 September 2014

Recently I discovered a wonderful little coffee roaster shop in Rochester, Michigan where they roast their own beans, grind and serve them in various forms of espresso. The Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters are located on the southeast corner of Main and Fourth Streets in downtown Rochester [Map].

To date, I've only visited there three times, but I can tell that I already love it. Their espresso and espresso-based drinks are quite amazing. Upon my first visit I merely had time for only a double shot and then had to leave. The double was nearly perfect and tasted supreme.

The atmosphere of the shop is nice, somewhat quiet and enjoyable. They do have live music at certain days and times, and so far, no one was there playing during my three visits and that's fine by me as I prefer a coffee shop to be more on the quiet side when possible. Though, there was an overhead stereo playing music and tonight, a couple of songs, unknown to me, were playing rather loudly and was quite annoying as I was trying to read about a friends online review of the La Marzocco GS/3 espresso machine he recently received. The shop could also do with a furniture upgrade. They have several couches as well as tables and chairs inside, and outside. The couches are quite worn, but not tattered. They sag a lot and you really sink way down into them which is mildly uncomfortable and not-so-easy to get up out of them.

On my second visit, a friend accompanied me. He's not really a coffee connoisseur but enjoys it nonetheless. I ordered a cafe mocha and he a regular latte. Your size choices are either small or large (8 oz or 16 oz) and none of this Starbucks grande, venti garbage. The cafe mocha was amazing and had a rich, smooth and wonderful taste all the way through from beginning to end. On top of that, quite literally, their latte art was simply amazing.

Also, at my second visit, I purchased a 12 oz bag of their Kenya PB Kiruga Single Origin beans. Roasted just a couple of days before, as indicated on the bag - a very important thing to look for! So far, I haven't found any Single Origin beans that I really liked and have stuck to blends mostly. However, in support of a local roaster and always willing to try a new coffee, I purchased it. The guy there told me they typically roast their beans to a medium, medium-light color, which, by some standards isn't dark enough for espresso. Some believe that you need a French or a Vienna roast to make proper espresso. But I won't get into that now. The next morning, I put a scoop of it into my grinder and then into my French Press for coffee. The smell was sweet and strong and well pleasing to the nose. The taste was equally well pleasing and I am happy to have found a Single Origin bean that I like.

Since the merger of Burger King and Tim Horton's I am in fear that BK will mess up Tim Horton's coffee beans, which have been my go-to favorite for quite a while now. I'm happy to report that this Dessert Oasis may be able to replace Tim Horton's beans in my rotation and that's just fine with me. I'd prefer to support a local roaster over a big name chain brand anyway.

My third visit was this evening and I ordered another cafe mocha and it was splendid, just as before. If you're in the neighborhood of Rochester, Michigan, please stop by and have an espresso and buy a bag of their beans!
