Wiki distinguished between two link forms, internal and external. Internal links received special handling as words with unique meaning to a community. See Context
Various namespace sharing mechanisms were concocted so as to join wiki sites. But the anyone can write anywhere meant that authors drifted to the largest sites. Conflating ownership and community has unnecessarily concentrated power over the once free and open web.
