obligatory mechanical keyboard thread
what are all the cool kids using these days?
Anonymous · 3mo · No.73
@64 @68 Well looks like I'm getting myself a Planck then! Can't wait to try it out and configure the hell out of it.

@69 nice

Alluminum Tofu 60% (layout with arrow keys), brass plate, lubed and filmed Gateron black inks, GMK Hennessey keycaps. I polished the Tofu case to a mirror shine (though it needs a little refresh these days), and I mounted the PCB using an o-ring sandwich screw technique, so it has a nice bounce feel to it.

@73 that's great! i hope you have a lot of fun with it. i'm not sure if you're already familiar with qmk and flashing but if you haven't already been using via/vial you should give them a look. i've had better luck with certain key combos in vial https://caniusevia.com/ https://get.vial.today/
it's all configurable while you're using the keyboard, everything can be changed on the fly. sure, it's not as "cool" as modifying and compiling the firmware each time you want to change your layout, but you can do that stuff after you've played with and tested all the changes first

@75 what is it you look for with switches and how did you land on the gateron black inks? i notice they only have cross stems do you experience any wiggle? do you often try out different switches?
Anonymous · 3mo · No.109
@104, wow, I am not familiar with this stuff and it looks wonderful! I have a 60% keyboard right now but there's little configuration I feel like I need to do since it already does everything I want it to do. Excited to get started on tinkering with my 40% whenever it arrives, thanks for these resources!

@105 I like smooth linear switches. I've tried many switches, and Gat black inks hit a price/smoothness sweetspot. I used to use box switches, but over time have come to value smoothness more and find that wobble doesn't bother me so much. That said, Gat black inks are on the less wobbly side for non-box switches. I would try out new switches more often if (1) I had a hotswappable PCB (easy problem to solve), and (2) lubing and filming a set of switches wasn't such an emotional drain (harder problem to solve).

Well folks I've been using my Planck 40 for a week or two now and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. Mostly retrained my fingers to be fine at touch typing. Everything feels more precise, and having no travel for doing pretty much anything is great. Layers are fun—I've even been able to program a dedicated key on my raise layer for the em dash, which imo should be on all keyboards. Thanks for the push everybody on here gave me!

@499 that's great! having no travel makes a lot of difference. being able to write your own key functions is extremely useful—emdashes are important.
have you already delved into buying caps and switches for it?
Anonymous · 2mo · No.501
@500 Indeed, I already have one GMK group buy in, but it won't arrive until late 2022. The turnaround time on keycaps is loooooooong. Rocking some Box Whites for now and enjoying them, but I'm sure I'll get into other switches soon enough. Any recommendations for clicky switches like the Box Whites or MX Blues?
