Met up with a gentleman named jesse at a storage unit in
Penn Valley. He and his partner were liquidating some of
their old farm supplies in preparation for a move across
the country. In search of cheap land and a new start, he
shared some tposts, fencing, and cages with me alongside
tales of how his farming went. Never had any mountain
lions but lost a goose to a hawk. After he kicked the
hawk to death (an action he now regrets) the hawks never
again bothered his flock. "There's a fungus invading
here," he said. "It's a yellowing that starts at the base
of the plant and works its way up. If you wipe the plant
you'll feel what seems to be a fine curry powder. The
spores. It was introdyced to kill cannabis crops but now
its spreading elsewhere. The kicker is that most of the
cannabis crops are resistant now". He didn't ask much for
his supplies-- most of it handmade. "I'll let you know
when I've gone through the shed. I'm sure we've got more
to get rid of". Godspeed, Jesse.
After I finished my jaunt to pick up fencing, I perused
the Friends of the Nevada County Public Library book
sale, and stopped at one more yard sale before going
home. I was able to get Y out of the house to go with me
to a gem and mineral expo at the fairgrounds. It was a
lovely day out, still a bit warm, and we had a veggie
hot dog while we checked out the little fossil lottery
and looked through a vast collection of beautiful, shiny
rocks. I'd never been to a crystal show but it reminded
me of a program at my childhood museum which would allow
you to trade in geological finds for finds that other
kids had brought in.
I love October weather. I have a couple pumpkins outside
and one that's actually growing on the plant. The leaves
on the maples and redbuds in the yard are either a deep
red or on their way there. Today I was able to successfully
run a cat 6 cable out of one room, along the house, into
the crawlspace, out under the deck and up into another
room. I'd been wanting to get that done for a long time so
I'm glad I was able to get it working after a couple tries.
Y is really starting to show. I imagine life will be a lot
different come February 2022.
I stopped by the Searls Library book sale and got two dozen
books, mostly history. I really took my time since it was
apparently to be the last book sale they were doing. After
that, Y and I went to Carolines cafe for a bit to play
Pokemon Go before I went out to Mountain Bounty Farm over
on the San Juan Ridge for a farm tour. The property is
gorgeous. 16 acres of cultivated vegetables of over 100
varieties. I got to learn a bit about their process and
also meet a number of folks from the local conservation
community. On top of that, we had the opportunity to pick
some tomatoes and make a tasty, fresh pico de gallo. The
weather was surprisingly warm-- a nice compliment to the
orange-and-red foliage. In the evening I moved some rocks
and got my sewing machine to work
A day of working on the side yard, laying rocks and gravel
out. I got several chapters further into Merlin
Shelldrake's Entangled Life which continues to be
fascinating. In the evening, Y and I stopped into a deli
that blew us a way. It is a delicatesan in the European
style with bulk foods for sale as well as fresh daily
pasta, delicious wine and beer. We don't eat out often,
but it' always a delight to find a special spot like that.
Y's birthday gift, an espresso machine, arrived. It was a
trick to get her to make me coffee. She unfortunately has
to suffer a half-caff mix until our son is born.
In the morning I took a stroll past St Mary's Convent in
Grass Valley and made a mental bookmark to visit it some
time. I purchased and sowed some hairy vetch as a winter
cover crop to prentend like I have some idea of what I'm
doing agriculturally. The maple is a deep red as well as
the Chinese Pistache.
I spent my day intermittently playing Old School Runescape,
sketching and resketching a trellis design and ripping out
the stone retaining wall in the front yard. I hope that I
am able to put something up to replace it before the rains
start. I was on hand to see if an internal certificate
expiry at work would cause hell. It was fine. My mother
shared a video of the family's fall party. I miss those
trips and I'm also sad to be taking my parents away from
that. Manyy of my relatives are retired and are balling
out. Maybe I'll take the train out there some day.
Spent several hours piling and slapping rocks together. I
would say I'm 1% of the way done now. Went to AutumnFest
at North Star house which was basically an old lady get
together but at least there was tasty pie.
Rained all day, nearly an inch! We're still below annual
averages for this time of year, but a rainy forecast for
the next several days looks promising! When I went to get
the newspaper this morning I heard two pacific chorus
frogs croaking in my neighbor's bush. My parents are
driving out to look at houses near us and I was able to
get them setup with owntracks hooked up to my mqtt broker.
It's fun to follow along their trip. I don't envy the four
days they decided to spend driving though.
My parents are here and we spent most of the day going to
open houses in the rain. Also the Grass Valley Museum at
the old orphanage. Weird ass docent. Soggy weather.
Rain. Digging ditches out in the rain. Troubleshooting a
weather station out in the rain.
Less rain
Parents have been over so I haven't had much time to
write. Happy Halloween!
