I spent a lot of time outside today-- went to a couple of
garage sales and had fun looking for baby toys. People
tended to like talking to me more once they found out Y
was expecting. Got a fun letter block toy amd some
clothes on top of a bunch of cool books, a CRT, floppy
disks and shithi. I spent some time in the heat mapping
out the yard and a painting the deck. Thinking about it
now I should have unscrewed all of tbe spindles and
painted them that way. Too late for that now! But it looks
alright. In surveying the backyard, I found we have a
mature asian pear tree, a pomegranade, and grapes. Got my
first yields from the non-jalapeno peppers. Got the storm
door working with some effort and played a few rounds of
Golf With Your Friends with an old grou p of gaming
friends. Had a nice long call with my parents. Tried my
damnedest not to think about computer things.
I've been bad about updates here. The last few days were
pretty hectic with the River Fire popping up
uncomfortably close to the house. But we took the
opportunity to practice our evacuation plan. Seeing the
tanker planes flying low overhead was both horrifying and
awe-inspiring. The whole experience comes with a large
dose of gratitude to the fire fighters and support teams
as well as those taking care of the forests even when there
isn't a megafire raging. Today has been smoky, with the
northern winds bringing the airborne debris of the Dixie
Fire down here. I learned how the recirculation feature of
the home's HVAC system worked. We planted some white peach
seeds. Yvonne will be out of town this weekend and several
of my friends will be on vacation so I may get a lot done
or I may get nothing done. Yvonne got us a copy of
Tony Miilionaire's "Sock Monkey Into the Deep Woods".
It's a lovely series that I recommend to anyone who loves
detailed pen-and-ink drawings.
Inspired a bit by reading a bit of Fiddlers Green Magazine,
I spent some time getting into the Talos Principle VR. It
took some time to adjust the controls to fluid movement and
slowly adjust myself to the sensation (and nausea). Putting
the tetris pieces into the door and looking through the
virtual terminal were so incredibly satisfying. I also got
frustrated with pycharm and installed vscode. Fuck Microsoft
but this thing is so smooth! Off the computer, I continued
mapping out the yard and finished painting the deck railing.
Now moving on to the fun vertical parts. I spent some chunk
of the day trying to determine the feasibility of a whole-
wall bookcase in the living room give the joist would run
parallel to the main portion of the bookcase. Oh god my
head is still spinning from that VR session.
Quite tired from working outside-- mapped the rest of the
yard, planned out some raised beds. Inside I read a lot of
Fiddlers Green. Put together characters for a Troika oneshot,
laid back with some coffee and later hot chocolate. Y came
home with three new frog friends. Tomorrow os a big visit
to the OB.
Baby looking good! I lied, it'll be about a week before Y's
bloodwork comes back and we know a gender. On the way home
we stopped at a German restaurant. It's like the only one
in the county so made sure to get a big brezel.
I went to the Nevada County Fair after work. I decided to
go alone so that I could pace myself and talk to folks
about their crafts and livestock without driving Y crazy.
The fairgrounds are simply magical-- carnival rides beneath
huge ponderosa pines, cute little cottage booths of
beekeepers, model railroaders, pigeon racers. I could spend
all day petting goats or lpoking at the floral arrangements.
Coffee and books
Baby confirmed for boy! That's not what we were hoping for
but hey we'll love them just the same. Now on to the
difficult part-- finding a name. Been playing Crusader
Kings III and Minecraft after work recently. I told myself
I would go back to painting the porch once the blisters on
my hand healed. They're still there, I tell myself.
Taught a little observability class bright and early in the
morning to some UK coworkers. For lunch, Y and I went into
town for a treat of Carolines Coffee and a caprese
sandwich. On the way there I found out the solar install is
much closer than I expected and when I got home an
electrician was here to look at the main panel replacement.
Later in the day, our Internet connection went to shit and
I called SmarterBroadband. They sound a nice old-school
tech who shared stories of Commodore 64 hacking and BBSes
and setting up redundant net links with an array of 56k
modems. He couldn't fix the connectivity (microwave in
trees is a complex business), but I loved his company. Both
visitors today remarked on the beauty of the property. I
have to agree. It's cooled down and the leaves are starting
to change. I'm feeling incredibly fortunate.
How much time Minecraft can suck away, but it's nice to
take a day and just fuck around. The weather is lovely but
I'm getting more and more paranoid about fire. Planning on
putting in an order for gravel and maybe bricks soon. Read
the remainder of Tales from Fiddler's Green and the first
chunk of Infinite Worlds no. 4. Still haven't gotten ftp
with proftpd to work
I got ftp to work with proftpd by simply not using the
truenas service and its weird mount permissions.
Day two of the solar install. Panels are up! There was a
wildfire nearby. The Bennett wildfire definitely caused a
stir but since it was in a relatively populated area it was
suppressed quite quickly. Thank you, firefighters.
Enjoying getting some of the features I swore off when I
decided against cloud storage solutions. Autoupload is back
with a vengeance with Nextcloud. Had a good talk with some
of the electricians working on the solar install. Note to
self: always bring a fire extinguisher in the car. Still
looking for a truck but I'm likely too busy this week to
actually go pick one out.
A deer slipped into the yard when the gate was open and
freaked the fuck out when we tried to open a gate to let it
out. It began slamming its anlers into the fence until it
managed to do a great leap and smash through the upper
half of the fence, knocking the chainlink clear off and put
a hell of a bend in the frame. But the fellow seemed
alright and got out of the area just fine. Time to bring
out the zipties it looks like.
