Capsule is live

2021-07-18

It's all been a terrible peertube accident.

Peertube had been on my radar for a while, and I figured having my own peertube would force me to understand it, so now I have a peertube server.

My feed is like youtube when it was young - it's full of people's amateur crap instead of finely honed productions of open-mouthed people backed by teams who are chasing engagement stats and algorithms (it was rumoured that the algorithm was favouring prominent faces on title pages with big smiles or gaping mouths, so whether true or not, everyone started doing that). The good peertube videos are also on/from youtube, but there's a heavy selection filter with the sort of person who puts their content on peertube, there's lots of Fediverse stuff there for example (I skipped peering with servers that lean into politics/culturewar, so haven't seen that side of it).

To have a show on peertube I think it's a rule that your background has to be a room full of haphazardly stacked junk.

It doesn't compare to Youtube for quality programming, but new feeds means new holes to fall down. Some kiwi guy has put the PinePhone on my radar, and I've learned of "smolnet" and Project Gemini. Coming from a web-user mindset I find the criticisms levelled at Gemini to be strong and I'm not sure it will be useful, but I'm always seeking surviving holdouts of the enthusiast web of yesteryear, and not sure whether it's nostalgia, or novelty, but Gemini draws me. The people into it certainly seem quite into it.

So now I have this self-hosted site with gemserv, an atom feed generator configured on a manual trigger, and am starting to use gemreader. I still need to adopt a gmisub structure - the format of this page may change.

Perhaps I should give the fediverse another look too, but there are already too many holes on my plate.
