Hope he survives through Bolsonaro government term. Currently the native peoples in Brazil are facing a lot of hardships, as illegal loggers and gold miners encroach around their lands, while government representatives either look the other way, or are just demoted/moved by politically compromised upper management if they dare to take any measures to ensure rule of law.

Interesting to read about a modern history, within living memory, of ranchers going into the woods and slaughtering the people living there, then bulldozing over their remains and villages, so they can then cut down the forest to raise cattle. Eat more beef!

That somehow reminds me of the opening of Terry Pratchett's "Nation".

Imagine waking up someday realizing that you're all that's left of "your nation". And then going on for decades alone. Now that's a frightening thought.

I don't understand why more effort isn't put into communicating with these isolated tribes and people. They've got a right to know about the world and to choose to participate if they want. The idea that their cultures and lifestyles justify keeping them ignorant and isolated is obscene.

It's tricky. There's lots of problems with missionaries that try contact with those premises, but end carrying diseases and killing lots those people who lack a immune system trained on our "civilized" pathogens.

The missionaries are their own special brand of obscene. More effort should be put into things like dropping sterilized radios or rugged tablets, with the intent of beginning a conversation with them, to the extent of "we will leave you alone if you decide that's what you want, but before that, here's what's happening in the rest of the world" and then build up to the point where they're treated as equally valuable human beings, and not pseudo- mystically revered academic projects.

Presumably there's a way of providing medical treatment and vaccinations such that they could make contact with the outside world. Just having access to information about sanitation practice, germ theory of disease, radio communication, and so on would mean enormous enrichment. If they choose to remain isolated having communications with the rest of the world over the internet would give them economic means of protecting their lands by altering authorities and the world about trespasses.

We collectively isolate them because their cultures are presumed to be of such importance that enforcing primitive and often brutally savage conditions is somehow acceptable in return.

Most African preserves offer better medical care to wild animals than these actual humans have - the imposed isolation seems barbaric, too me.
