Dream Bike

Vibrant blue steel bike with steel components and tan accents. All components chosen with road use in mind, but with enough tyre clearance to safely pass through hiking trails when I want to.

Entries are included in this list only when there are established parameters to make note of. Any parts pending any sort of bounds go in the final "Under Contemplation" section

2021 Apr 29 - it's probably not appropriate to call this a "dream" bike. What is a dream bike? Is there only one? If there is only one, it has to be able to do what you want it to. The dream gravel bike differs from the dream road bike, hm...

FRAMESET: Surly Straggler, in Chlorine Dream

I am made starry-eyed by the chlorine dream Straggler. It's a steel cyclocross frame, so it's good for road use and gives me more than enough flexibility to take it off road. The chlorine dream colour is beautiful. Incredible green-blue, reminiscent of Binachi's celeste.

BRAKES: TRP HY/RD, in Polished Grey

I do not like the look of disc brakes, but my infatuation with the Straggler outweighs that, and the Straggler's rim brake counterpart does not come in any colours nearly as pretty.

These are cable actuated hydraulic disc brakes. I get all the benefits of a hydraulic disc brake with none of the downsides. Apparently this is not an overstatement. Even if they turn out to have drawbacks, I do not want to deal with a full hydraulic system, and mechanical disc brakes are not appealing to me in the slightest.

I have already established I will be using downtube shifters, using cable actuated brakes as well means a whole lot of options in which brake levers I pick are open.

BRAKE LEVERS: TRP RRL SR, in Gum/Silver

Single speed brake levers, drilled to save weight and have cool looking tan hoods. The colour plus drilling gives them a kinda retro aesthetic, they look super nice. They are a little weird in my use case, they have a quick release which is useful on rim caliper brakes, but with disc brakes it does absolutely nothing. If I come across any simpler but similarly appealing levers I will replace this entry.

CRANKSET: FC-R7000, in Spark Silver

Standard 105 series crankset.

CASSETTE: CS-R7000

Standard 105 series cassette.

BOTTOM BRACKET: SM-BBR60, in Spark Silver

Standard 105 series bottom bracket. Actually from Ultegra. Threaded.

FRONT DERAILLEUR: FD-R7000-B, in Spark Silver

Standard 105 series front derailleur. Clamp mount.

REAR DERAILLEUR: RD-R7000-GS, in Spark Silver

Standard 105 series rear derailleur. Medium cage.

SHIFTERS: ???

I already know that I want downtube shifters. This is a difficult part to chose because they are so simple, but also difficult to find since modern DT shifters are somewhat of a speciality, so I don't know which brands exist. The one candidate I found so far, from Dia-Compe, is pretty expensive for how minimal it is.

SEATPOST: Soma Seatpost Layback

The Nitto S65 Crystal Fellow is a pretty sick seatpost, but the seatpost is not where I want to put money towards bling since visually it's not super distinctive anyways. The Soma aluminum seatposts are close, and are the same colour, and the silver colour is really what I'm interested in.

SADDLE: Brooks B17, in Honey

The classic leather saddle. Colour subject to change, since the brake levers are subject to change, and these elements should match. If I stick with the RRL SR levers, though, then Honey it is.

STEM: Soma Stem Shotwell 7D

The Straggler uses a threadless stem, this matches my pick of seatpost in colour. The Soma Shotwells have a couple of variants supporting various bar sizes, so I get some options there.

HANDLEBARS: Nitto M151 AAF

Features cable grooves so that bar tape doesn't bulge. 26mm clamp diameter. Sleeved center construction looks dope.

BAR TAPE: Brooks Leather Bar Tape, in Honey

Matches saddle.
