Miscellaneous Thoughts on Gemini

2021-06-26

---

The number of uses people find for this protocol is fascinating. That's why I enjoy reading the mailing list every day. I use it simply as a repository of content that I can fully control.

On the subject of content repositories, I'm surprised to see the number of static site generators being made for Gemini. Is it that difficult to manage content manually or with a basic version control system? I found the format of Gemini sites pretty easy to understand.

There's a part of me that hopes Gemini will remain a niche community. When communities get big enough, malevolent actors start looking for ways to exploit or harm those communities, and fanatical or disagreeable users start to give the community a bad name. I'd like this space to remain small, simple, connected, and trusting.

The nice thing about Gemini's simple structure is that bad actors can't artificially force bad content onto everyone else. The protocol does not support push notifications natively--atom feeds exist, but the user has to subscribe to them to get information from them. If I'm not interested in the content, I don't have to go where it is, and neither does anyone else.
