Between my Apple iPhone 3GS and my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, I owned an HTC Vivid, also known as the HTC X710a.
As I've mentioned in other places, I'd wanted mt first smartphone to be an Android phone. One reason was customizability; by that time Android phones were much more customizable than iPhones, which required a jailbreak to do things as simple as adding a custom ringtone. The other reason was variety; I already owned an 3rd-generation iPod Touch, which was identical to the iPhone except cellular connectivity, and I didn't want another device that did exactly the same things.
I purchased the Vivid in November 2012. Even in those days he phone was considered to be at the lower end of mid-range phones, teetering on budget levels. When I started using the phone I instantly found out why: the camera had poorly-programmed and aggressive noise cancellation, the 3.5 mm jack barely worked, the processor had overheating issues, and the modem began failing after only a year.
My time with the phone was also coincident with a relatively unpleasant time in my life. I had recently entered a new relationship, a relationship that eventually turned quite sour and ended with the other party cheating. Through the breakdown and the break-up I used the Vivid, finally getting a replacement phone a few weeks after the end of the relationship.
The phone had some features I liked. The body was plastic and metal, with no glass on the back, and the camera was recessed into the metal backplate. That meant I didn't need to sue a case. The battery was removable. The front of the phone had four dedicated function buttons, and I missed those buttons when I got a new phone. Ultimately, however, the cons outweighed the pros, and I simply didn't enjoy using the phone on a daily basis.
