5e NPC stats

Standard NPC blocks

This list is available all kinds of places, like the Kobold Fight Club for example, but they don’t have HD listed which I need for, uh, diegetic reasons.

Other resources

In the Essentials Kit there are expert, warrior, spellcaster (comes in healer & mage editions) from HD2 to HD7.

Also I made the four default NPCs.

The fill-in-boxes (and I suggest using scrap paper on the side instead, so you can reuse these sheets for every NPC) are completely deterministic so you only need the NPC:s level written down in the prep.

Prep overrides details on these. If the prep says they have some armor that gives them AC 19, well, then they have AC 19. If the prep says they have magic items, +1 weapons etc, well, then they do have that. If the prep says they’re dwarven, well, then they can see in the dark obv. Defaults are just defaults. But having a default is valuable. Makes it a lot easier to only prep relevant things. If the prep says they have a particular spell: spells are overwritten from left to right (i.e. “Fly” is overwritten before “Lightning Bolt“) unless the prep says otherwise.

They use the same simplified NPC rules that the monster manual uses, i.e. all classes have d8:s for hit dice etc and they don’t have all the abilities that a full NPC would have.

When I make my own 5e stuff from scratch I wouldn’t necessarily use these four. I’d refer to the existing stat blocks instead of rolling up a full NPC, or just put down a 0e like stat line (where pretty much everything’s derivable from HD).

But I’m converting some 2e stuff right now and it’s always “She is a female elven level 12 sea mage” and stuff like that, and then these four defaults are so great to have.
